The Halo washing station is located in the village of Halo Barite in Gedeb, within the Gedeo Zone—part of the broader Yirgacheffe coffee region. Sitting at elevations between 2,000 and 2,100 masl, the station works closely with around 700 smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on small, family-run plots. Farms here are typically semi-forested, benefiting from dense natural vegetation and shade trees such as false banana. This biodiverse environment creates a stable microclimate that supports slow, even cherry maturation and contributes to the clarity and complexity for which the area is renowned. Surrounding farms lie within close proximity to the washing station, enabling farmers to deliver freshly picked cherries quickly—often the same day—preserving optimal freshness and quality. At Halo Barite, coffees are traditionally natural-processed: whole cherries are carefully sorted and dried on raised African beds, with regular turning and close monitoring to ensure even drying. This meticulous handling helps develop the vivid fruit intensity, floral aromatics, and layered sweetness that define exceptional naturals from Gedeb.
