This lot was grown by community farmers in Taferi Kela and processed by Bette Buna at their washing station. A classic washed Ethiopian coffee, the cherries are first depulped, then fermented for 24–36 hours depending on temperature in concrete basins topped with water — a low-oxygen but not fully anaerobic environment. After fermentation, the coffee is thoroughly washed, defects removed, and then dried for 8–15 days on raised, covered beds. Finally, it rests in the warehouse to stabilize and reach the ideal moisture level. Each “lot” represents a different processing run throughout the season. The cup is sweet, vibrant, and elegantly structured, offering soft stone-fruit acidity, radiant citrus clarity, and expressive honeysuckle aromatics. Notes of apricot and lemon flow seamlessly into a refined, silky finish, highlighting both the care in the field and the precision at the washing station. At Sweven, we’re proud to present this coffee — a shining example of Bette Buna’s dedication and the remarkable farmers of Taferi Kela.
This coffee comes to us from Taferi Kela, Sidamo, Ethiopia, through our friends at Bette Buna — literally “House of Coffee.” Beyond farming, Bette Buna is a community initiative, carrying forward the vision of Grandfather Syoum and Grandmother Emame, who entrusted Dawit and Hester with both the land and the wellbeing of the village. Though Taferi Kela shares a mountain range with more recognised Sidama producers, it has been largely overlooked — until now. Bette Buna empowers farmers to improve soil health, restore agroforestry, and selectively harvest only fully ripe cherries, paying quality premiums that reward care and craftsmanship. More than 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings are distributed annually, creating long-term economic stability in a region where household incomes remain extremely low. Bette Buna is also an equal opportunity employer, providing fair work for people with disabilities, single mothers, and other largely disenfranchised groups. Traceability is exceptional — every lot is mapped from farm to mill, ensuring full transparency and fair compensation for all involved. At Sweven, we’re proud to bring this coffee to you, showcasing both its vibrant, elegant cup and the integrity woven through every stage of its journey.
