“Good coffee speaks for itself, without the need for human’s voice.” — Lao Wang, Founder of Red Dragon Estate. It has been eight years since Lao Wang, affectionately known as Lao Wang in Chinese culture, first ventured into the coffee industry with his inaugural batch. Raised in Baoshan, a region renowned for its small-bean coffee, Wang was inspired by his parents’ praise of Baoshan’s unique beans. This sparked a curiosity: could Yunnan produce coffee of similar excellence? Determined to find out, he returned to his roots, traveling across the coffee-producing regions of Baoshan and the Lujiangba area of Yunnan. From late 2016 to early 2017, Lao Wang drove his father’s car, visiting nearly 80% of the mountains in the region. His journey led him to Red Dragon Estate, where the high-altitude farms—elevated at 1,887 meters—made an unforgettable impression. Here, he met Uncle Yang, a lifelong coffee cultivator whose deep passion and commitment to the craft resonated strongly with Lao Wang. Despite limited financial resources, Lao Wang made a bold promise to Uncle Yang: he would purchase fully ripe cherries at prices above market rates and provide free seedlings of new coffee varieties. This partnership marked the beginning of Red Dragon Estate’s exceptional journey in the specialty coffee world. Today, under Lao Wang’s stewardship, Red Dragon Estate has become a symbol of innovation and quality in China’s growing coffee industry. The estate’s high-altitude farms, meticulous processing methods, and unwavering commitment to excellence have set a new standard for Chinese coffee, and Lao Wang’s dedication continues to elevate the region’s coffee to international acclaim.
